LACROSSE

This is for those who are interested in joining our team and playing lacrosse but don’t know the basic rules and the process of the game

Players & Equipment

Women's:

Women's lacrosse is a non-contact game played by 12 players:

-a goalie

-four attackers-

three midfielders

-four defenders.

Minimal equipment is required in women's lacrosse due to its non-contact rules.

-A stick

-mouthguard

-protective eyewear are the only required items for the players

- Headgear and close fitting gloves are optional for field players

—> Women's lacrosse begins with a draw, with the ball placed between two horizontally held sticks in the draw circle in the middle of the field. At the sound of the whistle, the ball is flung into the air as the sticks are pulled up and away. A draw is used to start each half and after each goal.
—>During the game rough checks and contact to the body with the stick or body are not allowed.

Men's:

Each team consists of ten players:

-one goalie

-three defenders

-three midfielders

-three attackers.

The lacrosse sticks are split between "short" and "long" sticks. No more than four players are allowed to carry a long stick on the field during the game.

The ball is made of solid rubber and is the same size as a tennis ball.

That is why

-helmets and

-gloves are required to be worn during the games, while

-shoulder pads

-arm pads and

-mouthguards are recommended.
—> Each team must keep at least four players, including the goalie, in its defensive half of the field and three in its offensive half. Three midfielders are allowed to roam the entire field.
—> Matches begin with a face-off with the ball placed between the sticks of two players in the centre of the field who then contest possession.
—> Face-offs are also used at the start of each quarter and after a goal is scored.

Origin/History

It originates in Native American communities where it was used as a training ground for tribal warriors and dates back almost a thousand years.

Object of the Game

The object of the game is similar to many team sports involving a ball, mainly to shoot the ball into the opponent's goal more times than they do to yours. The lacrosse stick can be used to catch, carry and pass the ball with the intention of stopping your opponents gaining possession.
When the opposing side has the ball the defending team can attempt to dispossess them using their sticks or bodies.

Scoring

To score a goal a team must shoot the ball from their lacrosse stick into the goal.It has to fully crossthe goal line.
If a player enters the crease (The goal is surrounded by a circular "crease", players can’t score from within said crease.) before the ball corsses the goal line – it will result in the goal being disallowed.

Winning the Game

The winning team is simply the one that has scored the most goals within the timeframe of the game. If scores are level after the game time is up, an additional period of overtime may ensue in which the first team to score a goal becomes the overall winner and that's when the game ends.

Few basic rules in lacrosse

  • The game duration is split into four quarters, each of 20 minutes. But this can change depending on the size of the field
  • Games are started with a face-off
  • Team time-outs may be called by either side, during which the game time will be paused.o

  • Players who make infringements – such as being offside or holding an opponent – are punished by being sent to the penalty box for a period of time, usually 30 seconds or one minute.
